The man you so readily insult is a good geologist and an honest man. He's got a project difficult to sell, but he persists, and I think it may pay off.

What is written and what actually happens or has happened are frequently different. Sometimes it doesn't pay to be closely bound to the print. This is true of geology too. An experienced person on the ground can see and guess things that are recorded nowhere in print.

Someday, when people ask why the Hay Mountain project finally went forward (to success or not cannot be known at this time) they will put into print some of Jim Briscoe's observations and interpretations, possibly ones that Briscoe himself does not yet know how to put into words.

You may think this is mystical. It's not. It's a description of most scientific advances.
