Samsung CDMA Equipment Lands On Chinese Soil

Samsung Electronics has shipped 536 CDMA base stations to the Chinese Mainland in its bid to wrangle marketshare away from other global telecom equipment manufacturers.
The base stations - the first of two shipments - will be installed in the Hebei and Tianjin regions. The second shipment, expected to have left Korea by now, will be installed in the Shanghai and Fujian provinces.
In April this year, China Unicom had awarded Samsung a contract to supply enough CDMA hardware to accommodate 1.13 million subscribers in four major high-growth regions along the country's East Coast, Samsung said in a statement. The commercial CDMA network is scheduled to be in operation by October this year.
The Korean manufacturer, which has been involved in the Chinese CDMA equipment market since 1997, also hopes to capitalize on the opportunity for sales of its mobile phones in the huge Chinese market once the CDMA network starts operating in October.
In the mean time, Samsung will go ahead with plans to take part in a test project for China's cdma2000-1x in the second half of 2001.
"The reason that Samsung Electronics is competing head to head with the world's leading telecommunications companies in China is that we are recognized for having the world's best CDMA technology," said Samsung Electronics vice-chairman and chief executive officer Jong-Yong Yun.
"We will also play a leading role in the upcoming 3G cdma2000-1x project in China. We aim to let the Chinese Mainland know about the excellence of our CDMA systems and handsets."
