My dear Grandmother and Grandfather on my Fathers side came over on the boat (literally) from Naples, Italy during the depression.
My Grandmother taught my mother simple Italian cooking.
I just thought it was normal to cook spaghetti sauce all day long simmering on the stove, and then let it meld in the refrigerator all night to heat it up the next day.
Hand made meatballs twice the size of a golf ball, with fresh graded romano cheese on top.
I thought everybody ate like that growing up...

Our family rituals were centered around the holidays, Thanksgiving and Christmas and the family dishes that had been passed down and became apart of the holiday expressions.
Sitting around a big table sharing a meal with family cooked in the traditional way. Dressing made in 48hrs with torn up French bread left overnight to get crusty then mixed with celery, onions, Italian seasonings and Italian sausage, then stuffed into the turkey with a bunch left over cooked in a large pan with drippings mixed in.
The dressing was always the best part dripped over with turkey gravy.
Pumpkin pies with homemade whipped cream and fresh coffee topped off the meal. I think thanksgiving was my favorite holiday because it brought together all the extended family for one gathering.
