Well, not just me. It works at my workplace.

Compute-heavy stuff is done on shared development servers. Makes a lot of sense when you have people working in many different time-zones around the world.

There's this thing called the cloud that's taking the world by storm and you can build private, internal development clouds where you take advantage of the best hardware for that task.

My son's workplace is similar. They give their employees MacBook Pros and they have big Intel servers to do stuff like processing genetic pipelines. It allows their employees a lot of mobility and flexibility of operating systems.
