Oxford Nanopore uses one pore:

Two pore guys use two, with the idea of better being able to control the speed of a DNA strand passing through the pore(s) and or being able to switch the direction.

Somewhere on a blog they showcased a video of a HIV test using this technology. In theory they could test virtually anything with it (with the specifically crafted capture reagent for the bacterial/viral/cancer RNA/DNA to be detected)
