FYI there are two kinds of shorts. The legal one which is against borrowed shares and which FINRA is reporting presently as less than 10,000 shares.
This short is actually good for the stock.
Then there is the abusive naked short which is criminal. This short is done with no borrowed shares and with the intent of never being bought back rather, nirvanna for this short is to bankrupt the company. This link provides additional information which may help you to understand.
