I have external nesting boxes that are about 28 inches off the ground. I built them on the outside of the coop, with a lid. Then I cut a hole in the coop for them to access it. That way I can gather the eggs without going in the coop.
It's really cool having the mother hen take care of the chick and watch how nature operates. She knows when to tuck it under her wing to warm it up, when to raise her wings to protect it. The rooster is protective of it, and the other hens don't pay it any attention.
Have you ever moved a broody hen? I tried it once, and she became un-broody.
