I replaced the house water pressure regulator. The water heater was banging inside, sounding as if it was having a fit. I turned down the heat level but that fixed it only for a while.

I turned on the hot was tap in the kitchen and the banging stopped. It started up again after a moment. Hell, I thought, I'm going to have to buy a new water heater. Home Depot here I come. For some reason I turned on the cold water tap and the sound stopped and started up again. Just as it had done with the hot water faucet.

That led to one thing in common: the water pressure regulator. It was one of those things again. I had brand new full brass regulator in the plumbing box that was a different make. I turned the water off, took out the old regulator, cut out some of the 3/4" pipe because this one didn't fit, soldered new fittings and and hooked up the new one.

I turned on the water, heard the water heater bang a bit and then it settled into its job. I think the spring in the old regulator that had a plastic bell and I don't know what else inside was flopping and causing the heater to sound like a bad tuba band.
