You forget the most likely reason for "How about a 3800+ for half a E6300?", that the Conroe MB is much more expensive than the one used for the X2. After all, Intel is supposedly having a chipset shortage and a Conroe shortage. Why shouldn't Dell get more for those? They need to make up for the lost preferential pricing, too. They also need to restrict demand closer to supply for those Conroe systems.

Transition is never as fast as Intel supporters would desire. It takes a long time to turn a Titanic.
