Now, it's changed. I too tried to purchase on line and received the message that the transaction was canceled, and I needed to call a broker. I did that, he had all the information (shares to purchase, limit price) and he executed it immediately. He even gave me a free trade for the trouble of having to call in.
I asked what was causing this and after he put me on hold for about 3 minutes, came back with "there are just some stocks that we require a broker for". No other explanation, and nothing about that it used to be ok to trade online.
Didn't somebody a couple of days ago post something about TDA was aware that the stock was being manipulated and was keeping an eye out for their customers? No such message today, unfortunately.
