Your post led me to write a longer reply with all my current sentiments but finally decided to reduce it to the following:
"If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, then it has to be a duck."
Consider yourself if duck´s behavior is meant as positive/harmless traits (naivity/inexperience/old skeletons in her closet) or intentional negative ones (cold readiness to lie, steal and damage shareholders´ money, and that without any honest, plausible explanation).
However, actually wanted to reply to your "ray of hope": This guy´s role IMO is still suspicious and doesn´t get better, not even if Kate may be somewhat suspicious, too.
