Also you're wrong about another factor; they aren't competing against big pharma. I've worked with pharma companies for 10 years and they prefer to allow smaller companies work out these drugs and just buy them out with they get approval. Just last year alone 3 of my biggest holdings were pharma companies that were bought out. Bigger payday than any penny stock. It's much more cost effective for a Pfizer, Gilead, Johnson and Johnson, etc to focus on large scale production drugs for larger scale diseases and buy out a smaller company while they are small.
Biotechs are always high risk, but the fact that their drug mechanism actually works and many researchers I know personally can attest to the fact that they're in a great position to get approval and be bought out.
