Watch Trump take the challenge to try and break new super-strength pharmaceutical glass

Even though President Trump used as much physical power as a professional boxer throwing a punch, he was unable to break new shatterproof glass being demonstrated at the White House.

As part of his “Made in America” campaign, Trump hosted pharmaceutical executives at the White House Thursday and even helped demonstrate a new piece of technology. Corning Inc., the maker of a new glass vial that will be used for pharmaceutical drugs, unveiled the product and CEO Wendell Weeks invited the president to test it out.

Trump exerted just 88 pounds of force using a laboratory pile-driving machine on the first, standard glass vial before breaking it. But the second, the Corning Valor Glass vial, proved a worthy opponent.

“This time, don’t be afraid to lean into it,” Weeks said to Trump as he put pressure on the machine. But after throwing the full weight of his body into it, the glass remained unscathed.

“For those of you who don’t normally measure things in kilograms, the President just exerted about a thousand pounds of force and the important thing is that Valor Glass vial is still intact and protecting the vital ingredients inside,” Weeks said to reporters who attended the event in the Roosevelt Room.

Weeks then leaned over to a White House aide before adding a bit of clarification.

“Reed Cordish from the Office of American Innovation wanted me to also inform you that 1,000 pounds is about the same as a punch from a professional boxer,” he said.

“People never knew that about me,” Trump joked, drawing laughter from the room.

“Some of us do,” Cordish responded to another round of laughs.

Executives from Merck and Pfizer were also present at the event and the president thanked them during prepared remarks he made Thursday.

“These three companies are announcing that pharmaceutical glass packaging will now be made in America. That’s a big step. That’s a big statement. We’re very proud of that. Thank you very much, by the way. And I know they wouldn’t have done it under another administration. I feel confident,” Trump said.

He explained that their partnership to create the new glass product would result in “an immediate investment of at least $500 million and the creation of nearly 1,000 new jobs.”

Trump said the glass would solve the “tremendous” problem of “vial-breaking” for doctors and patients.

“It’s also great for the healthcare workers who can administer the drugs — makes it much, much safer for them and safely without having any problems and worrying about vial-breaking, which, as I understand, is a tremendous problem that we’re not going to have anymore,” he said.
