The iShares MSCI Emerging Markets exchange-traded fund ( EEM) retreated by 0.3% in opening trading after reaching a fresh high last week.

Economic data releases in China and India failed to lift the iShares MSCI India ETF ( INDA) and the iShares China Large-Cap ETF(FXI) , down 0.2% and 0.5% respectively.

China's economy expanded in the second quarter. with gross domestic product (GDP) growth of 6.9%, but the Shanghai and Shenzhen markets closed lower, with the latter hit harder, MarketWatch reports. The rate of growth was greater than expected -- firm steel production was among the contributors -- and in line with expectations for 2017, Reuters reports.

India's June trade deficit -- the difference between imports and exports -- increased to $12.9 billion in June from $ 8.1 billion in the same month last year, though it narrowed from a 30-month high of $13.8 billion reached in May. "Gold imports have been on the rise since February after a slowdown during demonetisation," Bloomberg Quint noted. Imports of commodities such as oil and gold are likely to stay in check, and "the overall trade deficit should remain at a comfortable level by past standards," Capital Economics said in a report.

In Venezuela Sunday, 7 million Venezuelans -- less than one quarter of the population -- cast votes rejecting President Nicolás Maduro's plans to rewrite the country's constitutional reforms, NBC News reports, in a non- bonding referendum promoted by government opposition leaders. Violence broke out at a polling station where one woman died of a gunshot wound, according to numerous reports. The government sponsored a similar referendum. The opposition promised more protests.

The iShares Latin America 40 ETF(ILF) was off 0.3%.
