When I was growing up, we lived on the outskirts of a very small town. Right behind my house was about half an acre of grass and blackberries at the bottom of a field. Looking back, I'm guessing the reason the farmer let it grow, was for soil conservation? Above that patch of grass and blackberries were plowed and planted fields of corn and/or soybeans. I used to pick gallons of blackberries from that patch. Chiggers were just a part of life in the summer, didn't bother me much at all. My grandmother was a product of the great depression. She made cobbler and all sorts of heavenly delights with the blackberries. Thanks for bringing back my memories, they are sweet and fewer and further in between these days.
