Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley wants information on how a Washington opposition research firm was apparently involved in a pro-Russian lobbying campaign at the same time that it was overseeing the unverified dossier about the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia.
In a letter to Acting Deputy Attorney General Dana Boente, Grassley demanded to know whether the Justice Department is looking into the firm, Fusion GPS, for alleged violations of the Foreign Agents Registration Act, known as FARA.
The lobbying campaign occurred at the same time that Fusion GPS reportedly hired a former British spy to gather intelligence on Russia’s efforts to tamper with the 2016 presidential election and develop contacts with then-candidate Donald Trump and his associates.
“The issue is of particular concern to the Committee given that when Fusion GPS reportedly was acting as an unregistered agent of Russian interests, it appears to have been simultaneously overseeing the creation of the unsubstantiated dossier of allegations of a conspiracy between the Trump campaign and the Russians.”
Fusion GPS co-founder, Glenn Simpson, will testify before Senate Judiciary panel next Wednesday.
Simpson’s firm in 2015 commissioned Christopher Steele, a former British intelligence agent, to dig up opposition research on then-candidate Trump. Steele's salacious and largely unsubstantiated findings were later leaked to news outlets and published by BuzzFeed.
The dossier alleges Trump and his campaign colluded with the Russian government to damage Hillary Clinton.
Fusion GPS says it had no involvement in the meeting bit it did work on a lawsuit that involved Veselnitskaya for more than two years.
The BBC reported that the anti-Trump research was first funded by a super PAC supporting Jeb Bush’s campaign, which hired Fusion GPS.
The Washington, D.C.-based firm then contracted with Steele to compile the dossier. But by the time it was completed, Trump had secured the Republican nomination, the BBC reports.
So the research was purchased by Democratic operatives, before eventually being passed on to the FBI and the media, according to the BBC.

Chuck Grassley wrote to Secretary of Homeland Security John Kelly and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson in order to ask how the Russian attorney who met with Donald Trump, Jr. at Trump Tower in June of 2016 was allowed to enter the United States.
According to her sworn declaration, former Russian prosecutor Natalia Veselnitskaya was denied a U.S. visa to travel to the United States from Russia to participate in litigation. Although she was subsequently granted immigration parole to make the trip, her parole was set to expire on January 7, 2016. Her request to extend was denied on January 4, 2016. Recent reports suggest that she met with Trump campaign officials nearly six months after the expiration of her parole in June of 2016.
In his letter to Secretary Tillerson and Secretary Kelly, Grassley seeks information relating to how Veselnitskaya may have been able to stay in the United States until June, about any visa applications, visas held, or visa application denials relating to Veselnitskaya and any documentation relating to the conditions of her parole into the United States.
Russian agents allegedly involved in the ongoing effort to undermine the Magnitsky Act.
Among them were:
Rinat Akhmetshin, a Russian immigrant to the U.S. who was reportedly a former Russian GRU counterintelligence officer specializing in active measures campaigns;
Glenn Simpson, the founder of Fusion GPS; and
Natalia Veselnitskaya, Russian lawyer for Prevezon Holdings, a Russian-owned company the Justice Department alleged received millions laundered from the crime Mr. Magnitsky uncovered.
Her declaration raises a number of issues of interest to the Committee, which DHS and State should be able to help explain.
In the declaration, Veselnitskaya testified that she was denied a U.S. visa when she sought to travel to the United States from Russia to participate in the litigation but was issued a “parole letter” by the U.S. government that permitted her to enter for that purpose. Although the timeline of events is not perfectly clear, it appears that she was eventually granted this parole in 2015.
According to her testimony, she was also detained for two hours at London’s Heathrow airport when she was traveling back to the United States from a trip to London in November 2015.
Notably, Veselnitskaya’s declaration stated that her parole was set to expire on January 7, 2016, and that she had requested an extension but was denied on January 4, 2016.[10] Indeed, she noted: “Prior to [January 7, 2016], I will have to leave the United States.”
However, according to news reports, many months later Ms. Veselnitskaya allegedly met with Donald Trump Jr., Jared Kushner, and Paul Manafort at Trump Tower in New York City on June 9, 2016.
It is unclear how she was still in the country for that meeting despite being denied a visa beforehand and her parole purportedly expiring on January 7, 2016.
This raises serious questions about whether the Obama administration authorized her to remain in the country, and if so, why?

The Moscow lawyer had been turned down for a visa to enter the U.S. lawfully but then was granted special immigration parole by then-Attorney General Loretta Lynch for the limited purpose of helping a company owned by Russian businessman Denis Katsyv, her client, defend itself against a Justice Department asset forfeiture case in federal court in New York City.
The case was filed in 2013 in Manhattan by then-U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Preet Bharara. Katsyv’s father, Petr, was the Minister of Transportation in Russia.
The case was settled in May 2017, with Prevezon agreeing to pay nearly $6 million to resolve the claims, without admitting wrongdoing.
Under the terms of this settlement, the defendants have agreed to pay not just what we alleged flowed to them from the Russian treasury fraud, but three times that amount and roughly 10 times the money we alleged could be traced directly into U.S. accounts and real estate.”

Strange that Trump Sr. didn't know Rod Goldstone very well, but became friends with Aras Agalarovs and his son, Emin during the Miss Universe Pagent in 2013. Donald Jr. recognized Rod's name and recalled meeting him at a golf course tournament where Emin Agalarov performed. Donald Jr. was not at the Miss Universe Pagent in Moscow.
Aras Agalarov told Russian radio station BFM that he doesn't know Trump Jr. personally, though he acknowledges that they "did Miss Universe" together. But Agalarov told BFM that his son Emin Agalarov does know him. Agalarov told BFM he "doesn't really know" publicist Rob Goldstone either and he says the notion that Goldstone asked Trump Jr. to contact him about some dirt on Hillary Clinton is a "tall tale".
"It's simply fiction that this was some effort to create a conduit for information from the Russian federal prosecutors to the Trump campaign," Balber said on CNN's "New Day." "It's just fantasy world because the reality is if there was something important that Mr. Agalarov wanted to communicate to the Trump campaign, I suspect he could have called Mr. Trump directly as opposed to having his son's pop music publicist be the intermediary."

The law firm where Veselnitskaya is listed as managing partner, Kamerton Consulting, is based in a Moscow suburb and does not even have a website. A staff member at Kamerton told The Associated Press Veselnitskaya was unavailable for comment on Monday.
Her office in Moscow may be a shell. There is no working phone, email or website.
Russian President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Monday that the Kremlin is unaware of a meeting between Trump’s senior staff and Veselnitskaya and “does not know who that is.”

Her chaperone in D.C. was Ronald Vernie "Ron" Dellums, elected as a Democrat to the 92nd Congress in 1970 from the Berkeley, California, City Council. Ron escorted Natalia to a dinner party at the Capitol Hill Club in D.C. She also attended an event at the Newseum.
On June 14th Natalia was sitting with Obama’s Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul during a Foreign Affairs Committee hearing. McFaul was the architect of the Obama/Clinton “Russian Reset”, that eventually led McFaul to become the Ambassador to Russia.
An open Democratic socialist, Dellums went on to serve 13 consecutive terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. He was then mayor of Oakland, California, from January 8, 2007, to January 3, 2011. At 80 years old, he has continued his activism.
