Yes. That is what is otherwise known as illegal matched trades, or illegal wash trading. BTDG has seen many wash trading groups try to deceive new investors with the fake volume they provide, but it hasn't worked. The stock always gets crushed as the notes get converted and the wash traders try to unwind their fake positions. The so-called "buying groups" usually get hired by the note holders who want to dump into the "buying program".

Furthermore, if the SEC ever decides to move against the wash traders and the lead conspirators, then all hell breaks loose. This frequently happens. In some cases, the leaders go to jail.
