I rolled my 401K over to an IRA at etrade. It is simply one portfolio and works exactly the same as my non-IRA portfolio except to get cash out, you take a distribution, which can be taxed or not - your choice.
You don't want to short stocks in an IRA, and I keep mine as a cash, non margin account, so I have complete control.
My 401K was tanking (down about 50%), so I took charge of it and now it's up about 20X. I expect it to double again this year.
