Actually it's a short day, not a long day.

This is why you must cut the light back to get those flowers and buds to form.

Short-day plants flower when the night lengths exceed their critical photoperiod. They cannot flower under short nights...

Long-day plants flower when the night length falls below their critical photoperiod. These plants typically flower during late spring or early summer as days are getting longer.

Photoperiodism

That being said, your statements aren't completely inaccurate. Yes the longest day of the summer is coming up, shorter days follow.. flowering will be triggered.

However North Carolina will still have 14 hours of sunlight until the end of July.

North Carolina Daylight Duration

I do believe that gives us that 4-5 weeks before flowering really kicks in. Which is enough time male plants to mature.

As you said

They planted TOO late.

Quote:
Fibre hemp plants will grow to 2-4 meters tall without branching. In dense plantings (i.e.: seed drilled) the bottom leaves fall off due to lack of sunlight and the male plants die back after shedding pollen, generally 4-5 weeks into the growing cycle, lasting approx. 1 week.

BUT!!!!
The sun will trigger the Flowering stage in just 5 days, (June 21--its a long day plant-did you look it up?) and they haven't even pollinated yet.

And even if the males are a little late... you think they'd show up to the party and not bust?
