Medtronic Details Plans for Surgical Robot Launch -- Market Talk

10:51 ET - Medtronic (MDT) says it is hoping to complete the development of its experimental surgical robot tool by year end, and to record "material revenue" from the product in fiscal year 2019. On an earnings call, MDT executives said their main strategy will be to convert traditional "open" surgeries, where patients are cut open with scalpels, to a minimally invasive approach aided by surgical robots. "If we can shift open surgeries to minimally invasive surgeries, that's a $10B prize without a single new patient," one MDT executive said on the conference call. ([e-mail])
