If the reeler that we selected wasn't aware that our silk required fine-tuning or adjustments to industry standards, the blame for that falls first to Kim/Jon for not communicating that

That is not how I understood the problem. If properties were the issue then we likely would not have gotten the thread out of the transaction. So it is likely it was the cocoon size as I got from correspondence with others.

I ascribe responsibility to Kim. So he holds responsibility, as I have said several times. Take away your assumptions and insert Kim's assumptions and we have the issue we have. He didn't think it would be an issue most likely. I say this because it is reasonable to think he would have pointed it out, if he knew a detail might be an issue. Does it make sense to think he knew something and said nothing? It would be good to approach this as if you were the one sending the cocoons to be reeled. I think you would be willing to give as much detail as necessary, so as to help the folks helping you. If you want folks to expect you to know what you don't know, then it would be easy to dismiss.

Kim should have found an expert and not relied on someone that thinks they can just run this through the old-school setup.

Not sure that is what happened. What is important is that KBLB did learn and is proceeding.
