Actually, black bears kill more humans than do grizzlys. In most cases in Canada where black bears attack and kill humans, they feed on them, giving credence to the idea that this bear saw this person as food. This is not to say that the bear's behavior was "wrong." It was doing what black bears do in nature, that being looking for food.
Most bear attacks on people withing their range are because a human gets between a mother bear and her cubs, or because the human was close enough to be considered a threat to the cubs by the mother bear. Male bears seldom attack humans unless the attack is of a predatory nature.
You would be wise to carry some sort of protection with you while walking or jogging in bear country, K2. Pepper spray is a minimum level of protection. In an encounter, the pepper spray is nearly useless unless sprayed directly into the eyes, mouth and nose of the atacking bear, but if used in such a manner, can be quite effective.
