Explain how shorts bring it down?

When you initiate a short position you sell a stock... when you sell a stock, that means someone has to buy it (for every buyer there is a seller). When you want to cover, you are buying the stock ( someone else is selling).

Why does everyone think shorting instantly means it's going down?
