Back in the old days, each new generation meant 4 times the capacity of the old Sometimes they would produce a 2x one, but that was usually after the introduction of the 4x ones.

That's my understanding as well, which would make the 1 Gbit chip a major release, and 512 Mbit a minor release.

I don't know if the trend was broken with the 128 Mbit chips, because my vague recollection is that they were a mainstream for some time. You would get a 256 MB DIMM with 16 128 Mbit chips. But right now, 256 Mbit dominates. We will see what the next year or 2 bring...
