Here is what the SEC had to say (pretty much nothing since the company went dark in 2010). The way I read it is the only way the SEC is going to get involved is if someone actually complains to them about the ticker otherwise like she say's in her response to me it's up to FINRA.

Thank you for contacting the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

In your letter to the SEC, you note AmeriResource Technologies, Inc. (OTC:ARIOQ) (AmeriResource) filed for bankruptcy in 2016. You note the reorganization plan called for cancelling existing shares and taking the company private, and ask for information concerning the procedure for removing shares from the market.

As an initial matter, it is not clear whether you are affiliated with AmeriResource. Please be advised the SEC cannot provide legal advice to members of the public. Thus, if you need assistance in understanding your legal rights or fulfilling any legal burdens, we recommend contacting an attorney experienced in the federal securities laws. If you need help finding a lawyer, please visit our Fast Answer on Lawyer Referrals, available at https://www.sec.gov/answers/lawref.htm.

According to our EDGAR database, on January 22, 2010, AmeriResource filed a Form 15 to terminate the registration of its securities and its duty to file reports. You can view the notice on our EDGAR database, available at https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/876490/000107997410000035/ameriresource15-12g_12210.htm (the ?securities registration termination?).

While we do not have any further information about AmeriResource after the date of its securities registration termination, please be advised that when a security trades on an exchange, the exchange assigns the security's ticker symbol and processes any changes to the symbol. If the security trades on the OTC market, the symbol is assigned and maintained by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), a non-governmental self-regulatory organization. For more information about AmeriResource's ticker, you may wish to contact FINRA at (301) 590-6500 or as detailed on their website at http://www.finra.org/contact-finra. For general information about why a company may continue to trade after bankruptcy, please visit our Fast Answer on the subject, available at https://www.sec.gov/fast-answers/answersdfnctcohtm.html.

Please let me know if you have any other questions, and once again, thank you for contacting the SEC.

Sincerely,
