An April 11 terrorist bombing of a soccer team bus in Dortmund Germany was carried out by a Russian with dual German citizenship, Sergej W. age 28.

Sergej would have made about €3.9m euros from his terrorist bombing had the team been killed.

According to a police statement Sergej took a room in L'Arrivée hotel in Dortmund on April 11 where the Die Borussen Dortmund soccer team were staying, and requested a third floor room with a good view of the street.

After planting three bombs packed with metal pins in decorative shrubbery adjoining the street Sergej, bought 15,000 put options on Borussen Dortmund shares from a laptop in his hotel room - reportedly priced at €78,000 - betting that they would drop sharply after the attack. To finance the purchase of these Puts he used the proceeds of a recent bank loan.

After the team was loaded on the bus, Sergej remotely triggered the bombs as the bus drove past the shrubbery.

Fortunately only two people needed medical help, Spanish footballer Marc Bartra underwent wrist surgery and a police officer was treated for shock. As a result the plan proved minimally profitable.

Following the attack on 11 April which many assumed has been carried out by religious extremists, Borussia Dortmund's home Champions League match against Monaco was rescheduled a day later, which led Dortmund fans to open their doors to stranded away supporters.

Police connected the unusual trading activity in the share options of the soccer team with the bombing and traced the IP address to the hotel room where he was staying.

Police arrested Sergeij on Friday near Tubingen in Rottenburg, south-west Germany and charged with attempted murder, triggering explosions and causing serious physical injury.

Resident and fans are shocked by the arrest.
