I don't think that anyone who wants to sell, if it goes down on a manipulated step down, has a true understanding of the mechanics of what an MM does. They have to fill orders at whatever price the stock is at or lose that client, so he shorts. When he shorts, he has to somehow get shares lower than what he filled the higher order for in order to stay in business. Both filling the order and buy at a lower price are essential for them to stay in business. He is doing this on all of the stocks he is asked to fill. With DOLV he was way short and found an opportunity, because of the low volume, to cover his losses by bring the stock price down, so he can buy back shares to cover. That is the reason they gap the bid and the ask, so they can fill at a lower price when someone slaps the ask, so they can cover the sale with less of a step down.
