I prepared the bed in 2014. Dug a trench two feet deep, and filled it back in with aged manure, coconut hair, compost. I planted seeds but nothing came up so I planted some yellow crookneck squash seed. Later on that summer, I noticed some little fern like plants underneath the squash leaves and realized they were the asparagus. So I kept them weeded and watered. After the squash plants exhausted themselves I carefully dug them up.
The asparagus stems that year grew to over four feet tall. I cut them back in the mid winter and mulched them. In 2015 some spears were thick enough to eat. I didn't harvest them all. You have to allow some spears to mature so the roots can spread. In 2016 I harvested a bunch of spears, about four or five dozen, I think. Later that year Ali's crewmen buried the bed.
Those spears will eventually reach four or more feet sometime this summer.
