It sounds like to me you are on the right track as far as replacing the tiles goes. Pretty much the same as I would do.
The main thing you need to concentrate on is why the tile cracked in the first place. It will be interesting to know if the backer board is cracked as well!
The tile can crack and the backer board can still be in one piece "no cracks" if there is movement in the subflooring.
If the backer board is still sound, look for a problem with the subfloor.
