CNN AIRS TOILET TALK OVER BUSH

By DON KAPLAN

August 30, 2006 -- A CNN anchor's potty-mouthed bathroom banter yesterday wound up being broadcast live in excruciating detail during a nationally televised speech by President Bush.
Kyra Phillips, an Emmy-winning anchor/correspondent on CNN's afternoon telecast of "Live From . . . ," forgot to shut off her microphone when she went to the restroom.

Instead of hearing only the president's somber speech from New Orleans on the one-year anniversary of Katrina, viewers heard the voice of Bush overlaid with a minute and a half of Phillips' embarrassingly blunt remarks about her husband, sibling, sister-in-law and a girlfriend's latest romance.

The titillating back-and-forth began with a declaration of Phillips' unabashed devotion to a dashing spouse and his lack of ego.

"My husband is handsome and he is genuinely a loving, you know, no ego . . . You know what I'm saying? Just a really passionate, compassionate, great, great human being. And they exist. They do exist. They're hard to find. Yup. But they are out there," Phillips announces to her potty pal.

The friend then confides some obtuse details about her latest fling.

"He's going to come, you know. He's set for an extended visit," the friend says.

To which Phillips saucily responds:

"I mean, that's, that's how you figure it all out - those extended visits [laughter]."

The friend quickly adds, "Yeah, but my mom, I think she really likes him," prompting Phillips' sage assurance:

"Mom's got a good vibe? Good."

It's when the conversation turns to family that Phillips gets testy.

"Of course, brothers have to be, you know, protective. Except for mine," she says. "I gotta be protective of him. Yeah. He's married, three kids, but his wife is just a control freak."

Moments later, Phillips learns her uncensored blabbering has been beamed around the world.

"Kyra," her friend says.

"Yeah, baby," the anchor nonchalantly answers.

"Your mike is on," the pal says. "Turn it off. It's been on the air."

An anchor at CNN's headquarters quickly jumped in as the scene changed from the president's speech to the anchor desk.

Phillips later apologized on air.

"And by the way, we apologize for an issue we had with our mikes," she said. "We apologize for a little bit of an interruption there during the president."

CNN officials offered their own apology.

"CNN experienced audio difficulties during the president's speech today in New Orleans. We apologize to our viewers and the president for the disruption."
