Sears and Roebuck was founded in 1886 followed by JC Penney in 1902. They were disruptive, displacing the mom and pop general stores with the catalog mail order model. That was the end of general stores. It is ironic that the companies who practically invented disruption failed to react adequately to disruption of their own models: The advent of on-line shopping. Even after folding their old disruptive weapons (printed catalogs) years ago, they still stubbornly held on to their brick-and-mortar stores without taking Amazon, et al seriously.
