Actually SS has several advantages over comparable CDs, such as a bit of inflation protection.

Never understood why many IHUBers start collecting SS early. In today's low interest world, delaying collection, even to age 70, can be very smart.

I wonder about such studies. I may have a savings account or two below $1,000, but I have several bank accounts, and quite a few bank CDs (which have advantages few savers are aware of). Most of my accounts have fat balances.
