I've been in the industry since 1990 and I've never seen any shipment move without paperwork. The bill of lading is an industry standard document that essentially is a set of instructions for the driver and acts as proof of what was picked up and delivered (piece count/commodity description etc). I can say with absolutely zero doubt that every order that is considered freight (200 lbs and above usually) moves with a bill of lading and a delivery receipt. Sometimes folks also use the bol as a delivery receipt and just sign that though.
