No, unfortunately they don't. They would have to buy back in before the ex-date, however the key with divi shares is you generally get a 1:1 ratio, so you'd want to have a sizable position by that date in the parent company, and if by then the price have doubled or tripled, then depending on your financial situation you will likely not own as many shares as you would've owned at lower prices in order to be issued the equivalent number of shares in the spin-off.
