From what I have read about the Republican's new plan they are keeping the pre-existing condtions but getting rid of the mandate.

That makes about as much sense as telling people that they don't need auto insurance until "after" they have had an accident.

Who, in their right mind would pay for health insurance if they didn't have to, knowing that if they were to get very ill or have a serious accident they could buy it after the fact and be covered.

The insurance companies would never survive if people could purchase health insurance AFTER they were diagnosed with a serious disease or suffered a serious accident.

What am I missing here?
