With those notes out of the way, here's a few words on a game (and movie) rental by mail (over the internet) company that I had earlier experiences -- not good ones -- with. Consider this a follow-up to a much earlier article.

Here's my follow-up on Gameznflix.com. Some time back I gave them a test drive (actually a full-fare drive, since I paid for a month of service right away rather than wimping out and going with a trial period). At that point in time (much earlier in the year, January/February time frame), my experience was not that good, having never received one of the titles that was supposed to have been shipped to me during my subscription period (just under a month).

Several months have passed though, and still wanting to avoid paying too much money for my gaming fix, I decided to try Gameznflix.com again after waiting for a reasonable period and having heard some positive comments from other gamers I had encountered via Xbox Live.

Approximately a week and a day ago, I decided to sign back up for Gameznflix.com, this time in trial mode (14 days free). I submitted 3 different titles to the que, one of which had just been released (NCAA 07 for the Xbox 360) and then went back the next day and added 2 additional titles. All told I had requested 3 Xbox 360 games, and 2 PSP games (one of those was also a fairly recent release).

Today's mail delivery included the 3rd of the 3 items that I'm set to rent (3 titles out a time, unlimited rentals for $16.95 a month). I'm not sure where it originated from, but not unreasonable to show up today given the number of business days between initial request and today.

This was much better than my first time trying out the service. Earlier in the year when I tried them out they never could get the second disc/game to me (of 2 games requested) before I was forced to cancel as I was enterring a second month of service. It wound up showing up almost 2 full weeks after I had cancelled service.

Back then customer service was horrible (virtually non-existent) and I was forced to take alternate measures to find contact information to try to use to cancel my account and still be confident that I would not see a charge on my credit card for the lost game. I exchanged e-mail with a V.P. of the company several times over a few week period back then and made suggestions that they *please* raise their prices (yes, raise 'em) as they were so dirt cheap on rentals (2 discs out a time for about $13 a month) that they obviously weren't spending money on customer service.

There were apparently also a few non-flattering articles in mags like Consumer Reports that really got their attention and they've obviously worked very hard to improve things since that time.

They are still incredibly cheap at $16.95 for 3 out a time rentals. I am not certain how they are for customers reporting lost or non-received items (I've found Blockbuster Online and Netflix much better in that area in the past, but didn't experience that trouble this time with Gameznflix.com so can't tell for sure yet), a feature I was not happy with in my earlier dealings with them, but given the rapid response to customer service questions that I tried this time, I think I would be much happier if I had issues that needed to be resolved.

Partially as a test of their service, and also because I had a question about how their "buy" games feature works I submitted a question to customer service and found the question answered within just a few business hours. Much better than earlier when customer service was non-existent and questions that were submitted were never answered at all.

In answer to my question on their buy feature, where they show "Buy" and "Rent" buttons for every title, along with discounted "member" pricing for the titles you can buy, things were clarified immediately by their customer service's reponse. I was assuming that the "buy" feature would get you permanent ownership of a title you are renting but that isn't the case, or at least that is not what was confirmed by the customer service area. The question should really be on their FAQ's, and I suggested same, so that may happen in the future. Anyway, they will reportedly mail you a completely new copy, with manual and keep case, once you select the "buy" option. Selecting that option will wind up billing your credit card (that you have on file for rental). You have to remember to send back the rented copy (no rush, but the sooner you do, the sooner another title in your que is shipped to you) once you are done with that copy (normally when you receive your purchased copy).

Again, for me it seems that perhaps Gameznflix.com has resolved many of their earlier problems and is now worth getting a subscription from. I am quite pleased to be able to rent games for my 360 and PSP and save some $$ as compared to buying something that will just be devalued soon after I get it anyway.
