A SETBACK FOR THE CONTROVERSIAL OPEN PIT SULFIDE MINE PLANNED FOR THE BANKS OF THE MENOMINEE RIVER - A RIVER SHARED BY MICHIGAN AND WISCONSIN.
IN A THIRTEEN PAGE LETTER, THE MICHIGAN DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY WATER RESOURCES DIVISION SENT BACK A PERMIT FROM AQUILA RESOURCES, CALLING IT INCOMPLETE, AND REQUESTING MUCH MORE INFORMATION ON HOW THE PROPOSED BACK FORTY MINE WOULD IMPACT THE RIVER AND SURROUNDING WETLANDS.
ENVIRONMENTAL GROUPS AND THE MENOMINEE TRIBE OF INDIANS ARE OPPOSED TO THE MINE - SAYING IT WOULD POLLUTE THE RIVER AND DESTROY IMPORTANT TRIBAL LANDS.
