I think the to in the example you posted is correct but the too is not just use the also instead of the too and I think we can agree it don't work.

Your grade school teacher taught a fine lesson, but perhaps in junior high (my era) or middle school (current era), one of your English teachers might have mentioned that "too" means "to a higher degree than is desirable, permissible, or possible" also?
