That's always the big question. I think it's the misery loves company psychological element. People hate to miss out on the party - if they're not a part of it, they want everyone else to be unhappy too. So even if he's not shorting or even hoping to buy low, he's hoping the stock goes to zero so that he doesn't miss out on a huge opportunity.
I always think of the movie Envy, where Ben Stiller could have just invested like $2,500 into Jack Black's idea but doesn't do it. Then Jack Black's character becomes a billionaire from his idea and Stiller is sick to his stomach, wishing he'd only just invested a little money. He would have been much more relieved if Black's idea had failed of course.
