Can someone help me to understand what the strategic value is for the company to retire 1/3 of the shares? Does that not imply that they are giving a lot of their own $? Who's shares were they officially?

I'm not used to seeing ppl give up something they own just out of goodwill? Surely their must be some overall strategic benefit to it?
