The first set of onion seeds have been planted. I know I'm odd, but I think this is a hoot. I've read several different methods for planting the seeds. I don't know which one is best? So I did all 3.

The seeds I planted were Ailsa Craig, which is a long season, large bulb variety. I ordered the seeds from Baker Creek Heirloom and they said there were a minimum of 300 seeds. That gave me enough to experiment with.

I took an old glass aquarium and put compost in it, then scattered the onion seeds over the top of the soil and covered it with a clear plastic, outside in direct sunlight.

I planted another batch in a clear plastic box in the same manner, except I placed these in a shaded area on the north side of my house, like the post I'm replying too suggested.

I planted a third batch in an open container indoors.

I've also got 6 bunches of onion sets coming from Dixondale Farms. They won't ship until March.

We should have plenty of onions this year, even if they are all dinks!
