Arequipa (Arequipa region), Jan. 27. Peru's Energy and Mines Minister Gonzalo Tamayo and Colombian counterpart German Arce on Friday inked a cooperation agreement to promote mining sector policies, mainly in relation to mining formalization and social-environmental management.

Reached at the 3rd Peru-Colombia Binational Cabinet in Arequipa, the deal is intended to implement mining formalization and social-environmental management policies using new technologies to promote sustainable mining.

"The main goal is to exchange small-scale mining formalization-oriented policies and experiences, as well as share best practices, adapting resource use and using less mercury," Minister Tamayo said.

The agreement provides for coordination and implementation of formalization-oriented actions for subjects involved in a process.

A binational working group must be established to implement the agreement and coordinate the execution of activities. It shall convene once a year.
