Biomass (wood or other biomass) is fed into a fluid bed reactor. There it is torrefied (a mild pyrolysis, in air) which increases the energy density of the wood from ca. 10-15 GJ/tonne to over 22 GJ/tonne, and simultaneously makes the biomass hydrophobic, biologically stable, easy to ship, store, handle, grind and burn in existing energy generating assets. In 2015 the top 10 coal producing countries produced 7154 million tonne of coal, making it unlikely we will ever be able to service more than1% of the potential market. The market cap for 1% (70 million tonne) would be $14 billion.
A medium sized power plant that currently burns coal could incur CAPEX in excess of $200 million to convert to white wood pellets. This cost can be eliminated by converting to bio-coal as little if any changes have to be made to current equipment in the plants. Bio-Coal can also be used for the residential and district heating market which is as large as power generating market. Other industries such as steel manufacturers have shown an interest in using bio-coal as a coal replacement.
