WASHINGTON -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency may never be the same.
In the words of FEMA director David Paulison, "What happened in Katrina has changed the face of emergency management in this country."
The head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency told reporters there were many lessons learned. For one, FEMA will no longer wait until a disaster overwhelms local and state responders before getting involved. He says that "obviously didn't work in Katrina," so federal help will "be there from day one" in response to future disasters.
Paulison said they've stockpiled a lot more emergency supplies, and GPS tracking will ensure they're in the right place at the right time. Major communications improvements will ensure everyone shares the same information.
As Paulison said, "We cannot let the deaths and the suffering of those Katrina victims go in vain."
