"Hollywood has taken artistic licence with the plot but the true story the film is based on - the $6billion Bre-X mining scandal - really is astonishing.

McConaughey plays 'brash, chain-smoking, pot-bellied mine prospector' Kenny Wells, who dreams of finding a mythical pot of gold which will make his fortune.

He meets a semi-mystical geologist who convinces him to come to Indonesia and eventually persuades him to make a claim on a patch of jungle in Borneo.

Wells is based on David Walsh, a Canadian mining prospector, whose company Bre-X was the darling of Wall Street in 1995 when he struck gold in Busang, Indonesia.

At one point it was claimed Busang contained 70 million ounces of gold, worth billions of dollars."
