I think I have the relationship between GDXJ and GLD now.

GLD has strong trends. GDXJ stair steps in that trend. The reason it stair steps is earnings.

GLD reverses its trend GDXJ will follow it until it reaches a point where its earnings are fair valued or overvalued in relationship to the quarterly average to the price of gold.

if the price of gold continues up. GDXJ will burst up to it's next stair level and oscillate there in a 2 to 3 dollar range until the gold price makes its next move.
