Let's start a dialogue here. Does an E-4 with 2 years have to make $2,100 a month taking in consideration that he gets three hots and a cot, clothing allowance, and medical and dental care?
I'm not talking about men and women in combat, those whose lives are on the line. I'm talking about the vast majority of military who are supporting the troops, those who are typing (Remington Raiders) and fixing electronics and machinery stateside. Case in point: My neighbor's son is in the Navy, a computer tech based in San Diego. He's an E-5, making $2,500 base pay and, hear this, getting $2,000 a month housing allowance to live off base. His apartment costs $1,500 and he pockets the $500. He drives a super nice car.
After their service they get full college payments for the school of their choice. No cost of education to pay off when they graduate.
The exception to my take are the married troops. When I was in the military the allowance for wife and dependents was woefully inadequate and I'm sure that fact contributed to an outflow of men who would have stayed in had their situation been different.
Servicemen who are in for 2-3-4 years and who are not in combat or a combat zone should make a decent wage for sure that allows them to buy beer and treat their dates to a good time, maybe save money when they get out, but they should consider their time in as service to our nation.
