CPU Pricing / Supply

Here is a pretty lengthy analysis using the Pricegrabber search engine. I like this one, since it allows you know whether parts are in stock. The price range includes the 5 lowest prices. Hopefully, you find the data interesting.

** Dual Core AMD
Athlon FX-62 (125W, 2.8GHz, AM2) - $794-$830 (List: $827), in stock at 21 sellers
Athlon X2 5000+ (89W, 2.6GHz, AM2) - $367 (List: $301), completely out of stock
Athlon X2 4600+ (89W, 2.4GHz, AM2) - $241-251 (List: $240), in stock at 28 sellers
Athlon X2 4600+ (89W, 2.4GHz, 939) - $246-266 (List: $240), in stock at 20 sellers
Athlon X2 4600+ (65W, 2.4GHz, AM2) - ??? (List: $276), MIA
Athlon X2 4200+ (89W, 2.2GHz, AM2) - $181-185 (List: $187), in stock at 43 sellers
Athlon X2 4200+ (89W, 2.2GHz, 939) - $180-188 (List: $187), in stock at 32 sellers
Athlon X2 4200+ (65W, 2.2GHz, AM2) - $279 (List: $215), in stock at 1 seller
Athlon X2 3800+ (89W, 2.0GHz, AM2) - $122-149 (List: $152), in stock at 44 sellers
Athlon X2 3800+ (89W, 2.0GHz, 939) - $149-156 (List: $152), in stock at 25 sellers
Athlon X2 3800+ (65W, 2.0GHz, AM2) - ??? (List: $176), MIA
Athlon X2 3800+ (35W, 2.0GHz, AM2) - ??? (List: N/A), MIA

Comments:
- 3800+, 4200+, 4600+, and FX-62 parts all plentiful and in stock.
- Stock prices of the above mostly in line with list pricing, below in some cases
- 5000+ completely out of stock
- Energy efficient skus MIA, except for one vendor with 4200+ EE.
- Seems AMD is not able to manufacture low power parts at this time, either 2.0-2.4GHz at 35W or 65W, or 2.6GHz at 89W.

Sempron 3000+ (62W, 1.8GHz, 128KB, 754) - $50-58 (List: $56), in stock at 36 sellers
Sempron 3000+ (35W, 1.6GHz, 256KB, AM2) - ??? (List: N/A), MIA
Sempron 2800+ (62W, 1.6GHz, 256KB, AM2) - $42-48 (List: $47), in stock at 37 sellers
Sempron 2800+ (62W, 1.6GHz, 256KB, 754) - $44-48 (List: $47), in stock at 35 sellers

Comments:
- All single core processors at stock wattage are in good supply
- Stock pricing still pretty close to list. Not much discounting going on.
- All "Energy Efficient" skus are MIA. The whole thing appears to be a complete smoke screen against Conroe, but none of these skus actually exist.
- By the way, I think it's a crime that AMD can sell a Sempron 3600+ for more than an Athlon 64 3200+, when the former has identical specs, and half the cache of its lower priced cousin.

** Intel Core 2
Core 2 Extreme X6800 (75w, 2.93GHz, 4M) - $1,150-1,185 (List: $999), in stock at 5 sellers
Core 2 Duo E6700 (65W, 2.67GHz, 4M) - $602-700 (List: $530), in stock at 2 sellers
Core 2 Duo E6600 (65W, 2.40GHz, 4M) - $375-409 (List: $316), in stock at 6 sellers
Core 2 Duo E6400 (65W, 2.13GHz, 4M) - $240-245 (List: $224), in stock at 20 sellers
Core 2 Duo E6300 (65W, 1.86GHz, 4M) - $194-200 (List: $183), in stock at 29 sellers

Comments:
- Volumes seem to be picking up, especially for the lower end skus, and with volumes, the price premium is slowly disappearing
- Not much else to say... only 3 weeks after launch, and volumes are starting to become healthy. What ramp problems?

** Intel Dual Core
Pentium D 960 (130W, 3.6GHz) - $323-341 (List: $316), in stock at 26 sellers
Pentium D 950 (95W, 3.4GHz) - $224-232 (List: $224), in stock at 36 sellers
Pentium D 940 (95W, 3.2GHz) - $187-196 (List: $183), in stock at 36 sellers
Pentium D 930 (95W, 3.0GHz) - $175-186 (List: $178), in stock at 37 sellers
Pentium D 920 (95W, 2.8GHz) - $170-205 (List: $178), in stock at 15 sellers
Pentium D 820 (95W, 2.8GHz) - $114-118 (List: $113), in stock at 58 sellers
Pentium D 805 (95W, 2.66GHz) - $91-97 (List: $93), in stock at 49 sellers

Comments:
- Volumes seem healthy, and stock pricing is generally above list. Not much discounting going on here.
- The two newest skus, the 945 and 915, don't seem accessible in this search engine, even though they seem to be available from many vendors (Newegg included).
- There seems to be a lot of demand for Smithfield parts, even in spite of the poor performance/watt. Evidently, price must have something to do with it. wink

** Intel Single Core
- I'm not going to bother listing all the 5xx and 6xx parts, since there are so many, and Intel is ramping most of these down by the end of the year.
- A quick glance reveals most products conforming to the Intel price sheet.
- The new Pentium 4 chips - the low priced 541, 531, and 524 - seem to be in low supply with high premiums over list price.
- This suggests that Intel is keeping up with most market demand using inventories and older skus. This is supported by such good volumes on all the skus that are still priced >$200.
