Patents are given on very very specific ideas that are new and inventive.

The new patentable idea may be on a microscopic level. Many levels of variations that are already known can not be patented because it is common knowledge. One company may have a patent on a new drug or delivery system of a common drug. It may be that the drug naturally found in marijuana is only in need of a revolutionary delivery system that could get a patent. If OWCP patents, given that they are granted and issued, are better ideas that the competitions patented ideas, the market will buy it. The market will buy the better idea. The patent is only for the protection of the new idea. Drug companies fight over this.

I take comfort in knowing that two big distributors chose to give OWCP $600,000 ($300K each) in exchange for royalties or shares (some shares priced at .25 and .40 cents while current price was around 10 cents). These companies would not be so generously investing in OWCP if they didn't like what they are seeing. All that being said, it looks like the patents that OWCP are well worth investing in. Teva Pharmaceuticals is one of the largest drug manufacturers in the world and they expressed interest in the Patents owned by OWCP.
