Yahoo (YHOO -1.4%) is disclosing a security breach -- "likely distinct" from the one it disclosed in September -- that may affect more than a billion user accounts.
The company got information from law enforcement last month about files that a third party said was Yahoo data, and Yahoo now believes it's legitimate. "Based on further analysis of this data by the forensic experts, Yahoo believes an unauthorized third party, in August 2013, stole data associated with more than one billion user accounts."
The company has not been able to identify the intrusion associated with this theft," a Yahoo statement continues. "Yahoo believes this incident is likely distinct from the incident the company disclosed on Sept. 22, 2016.
The information may include names, e-mail addresses, phone numbers, dates of birth, hashed passwords and even some security questions and answers (encrypted or unencrypted).
After hours: YHOO -2.1%; Buyer-in-waiting Verizon (VZ -1.4%) flat.
